DESCRIPTION:The Moline Historic Preservation Commission is rolling out a new Self-Guided Heritage Walking Tour in downtown Moline Centre.  As part of the rollout celebration\, guided tours will be offered 10:00\, 10:15 and 10:30 a.m.  Tours will take approximately one hour.  During this time you will journey back in time and enjoy historic re-enactments along the circuit.  An architectural scavenger hunt for young and old is also planned.   To take a guided tour meet at the kiosk located on the corner of River Drive and 15th Street near the John Deere Pavilion.   You can access the tour on your own at any time through your smart phone via QR codes available on downtown Moline kiosk posters\, postcards and brochures.  For more information see www.molinepreservation.org

DESCRIPTION:The Star Block is being renovated by Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation.  Construction Director\, Andrew Fisher will lead a very special hard hat tour through the consturction site for RIPS members only.  The tour will offer the opportunity to actually see what it takes go turn historic office space into new loft apartments.  Space on the tour is limited and reservations are required.  RSPV to LWickerRPh@aol.com \nThe Star Block\, built in 1874\, was designed by architect Isaac Holmes.  It is actually 3 separtate buildings\, designed to appear as a single entity tied together by a common cornice.  The three-dimensional star in the peak and the painted “BLOCK” are original.  Street level storefronts were cast iron with recessed entrances.  Early businesses located in the Star Block include Walker and Dodge clothing firm\, Schmidt & Son Barbers\, City Meat Market\, and a showroom for Fred Haas who crafted and sold stoves\, steam brewing kettles\, and all varities of copper and sheet metal work.  The upper floors were home to professional offices and residences. \n

DESCRIPTION:The City of Rock Island is hosting a meeting in the 2nd floor Community Room to present the draft Heritage Resources Plan and to discuss preservation issues and opportunities in an informal open house setting. The plan\, which is nearing completion\, outlines specific stratagies for enhancing the City’s current historic preservation program.  With this plan\, the Rock Island community desires to build on past preservation successes and to identify priority areas for preservation and reinvestment in order to shape and contribute to the City’s urban form\, character\, and overall economic development.  Everyone with any interest in historic preservation is encouraged to attend.
