Wallace Grove Neighborhood Walking Tour
August 24, 2014 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Nestled amidst beautiful mature oak trees is one of Rock Island’s lesser known neighborhoods, Wallace Grove. The neighborhood developed between 1900 and 1930 and includes a wide variety of architecture including American Foursquare, Colonial Revival, Craftsman Bungalow and Shingle Style. There is a Gordon-Van Tine house, a house that was moved into the neighborhood in 1972 and an unusual Bungalow Courtyard apartment complex. No fewer than five of the properties are on the Rock Island Preservation Commission’s MOSUS list of significant structures. Familiar family names connected with the neighborhood include Wheelan, Knox and Potter. The neighborhood was home to two different Audubon school buildings as well.
Rock Island Preservation Society members will serve as guides taking you for an exterior walking tour through the Wallace Grove neighborhood on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 2PM – 4PM. The small group tours will leave from the side yard of 2630 16th Ave, Rock Island, IL, and will last approximately 60 minutes. The public is invited to tour the neighborhood at no charge, though donations are welcome. There is no rain date.
If you would like to see a “jerkinhead”, learn more about the MOSUS list, discover the elements that are important to the Shingle Style, or be introduced to the work of a Russian Jewish immigrant and builder, Frank Perkins, join us for this fun and informative tour. We hope to see you there!
